 Hands-on Training

Hands-on training is easy to do using ITI Checklists. It may be offered within the practice, in a Dental Assisting School Program, or in a University Orthodontic Residency Program. Hands-on training is currently offered at New York University Department Of Orthodontics to incoming orthodontic residents and international dentists.   • Given to up to 10 users at one time 

    • 10 Users in a practice
    • 10 students and faculty in a school
    • 10 Orthodontic residents and faculty
 
  •  Courses to be taught in the Hands-on Training are selected

    • Courses are identified such as

      • Photography

      • Alginate Impressions

      • Appliance Model Fabrication

      • Cephalometrics

      • Facebow Registration, Bite Registration, and Mounting Models

      • Separators and Banding

      • Orthodontic Bonding and Bracket Positioning

      • Wire Ligation and the Retie Appointment

      • Assisting during the Finishing Phase

      • Debanding

      • Treatment Record

      • Assisting during the New Patient Exam

      • Preparing Records for a Diagnosis and Treatment Planning Session

      • Patient Treatment Consultation

      • Train the Trainer and Practice Management

    • Multiple half-day sessions are scheduled for the Hands-on Training

  • All Users study and pass selected online courses prior to Hands-on Training

    • Users obtain ITICourses Online Accounts before Hands-on training is scheduled

    • Required courses are specified in the Knowledge Profile

    • Students study Knowledge Profile courses and pass all post-tests earning CE Certificates before Hands-on training. Dr. Rebecca Poling and other faculty are "Supervisors" of User accounts and monitor learning

    • Reports are generated that all online courses have been completed by all Users

  • Users Setup Notebooks before Hands-on course begins

    • Contains copies of all CE Certificates that are earned

    • Credentialing Task Form to be completed in Hands-on Training

    • Packet of Checklists and Forms are given to each User before the Hands-on Training to be completed in the course

 
  • Hands-on Training Schedule

    • 3 days to 8 days in length

    • Combination of

      • Short lectures

      • Lab/Dentoform/Crowded Models sessions

      • Preclinical sessions working on a partner

      • Actual clinical sessions working with patients

    • Users complete all tasks on Credentialing Task Form

      • Performance Steps Checklists

      • Quality of Results Checklists

  • Each student is "Credentialed"

    • Must complete all tasks listed on Credentialing Task Form documenting performance with photographs of projects

    • Projects are evaluated with checklists and kept in the User's Notebook

  • At the end of the course, each student submits a Notebook with self-evaluations for every Credentialing Task
    • Students are given Packets of Checklists and Forms to use in Hands-on Course and insert in personal Notebook

    • Notebook contains

      • Copies of all CE Certificates earned online

      • Photographs of all completed projects

        • Final photographic series

        • Alginate impressions

        • Poured and trimmed study models

        • Placed separators

        • Fitted bands on a dentoform

        • Bracket positioning on a crowded model

        • Each step in bonding a live "patient-partner" using "toothpaste-etch"

        • Others

      • Student evaluations of quality of final projects using Product Checklists 
        • Check which criteria were not met
        • Teaches a Product Standard for each project
      • Student evaluations of steps of each procedure using Procedure Checklists 

        • Evaluate which steps should have been performed differently to produce a better product-result 

        • Objective is to train students to perform each procedure in a standard way and to learn from their "mistakes"

      • Completed Practice Forms such as:

        • The New Patient Exam from partner

        • New Patient Exam filled in from Sample Patient Photographs and Panorex

        • Cephalometric tracing, measurements, analysis, and superimposition from Sample Patient cephs

        • Model analyses from Sample Patient models

        • Treatment Record, Diagnosis and Consult Checklist, Treatment Plan, Financial Forms, Consent Checklist, from Diagnosis and Treatment Planning Session of Sample Patient

      • Practice Management activities of the team

        • Morning huddle reports

        • Afternoon wrap-up reports

        • Team member feedback forms

  • Hands-on Experiences

    • Complete a New Patient Exam on partner and give partner summary of need for treatment

    • Produce perfect photographs on partner

    • Produce perfect impressions on partner

    • Pour and trim study models to ABO standards of partner

    • Examine, work-up records, and Diagnosis and Treatment Plan Sample Patient

    • Prepare all materials for a Treatment Consultation with the Sample Patient

    • Provide oral hygiene instructions to partner

    • Place and remove separators on a mounted dentoform

    • Fit first molar bands on a mounted dentoform for an appliance, take an impression, place and secure bands in the impression, pour the appliance model 

    • Mark crowded models for bracket placement, glue brackets on models in position, insert and tie in .014 NiTi wire, debond brackets, clean up model, clean glue from brackets

    • "Bond" brackets to mounted dentoform following sequence of steps taught in online courses using bonding materials and "toothpaste" etchant

    • Demonstrate assembly, placement, removal, disassembly, and preparation for sterilization of the Great Lakes Dry Field System on partner

    • "Bond" brackets 7-7 on partner following all steps taught in online courses using "toothpaste" etchant

    • "Debond" partner restoring teeth to a high shine following steps taught in Debanding Course
